Well, so much for using synths as counterpoint rather than as the main attraction. I don't know this with 100% certainty, but I'm willing to bet that the band lost a lot of fans with this album, for a few reasons: 1. Alex Lifeson must have started to get worried. Lead track 'Subdivisions' is very heavy on the keyboards, combines a strong rhythm section with this, but contains very little actual guitar bar a decent solo towards the end.
