Commissioned by Diaghilev, initially as a vehicle for Nijinsky, Josephslegende was Strauss's first complete ballet score. Depicting the attempted seduction of the biblical Joseph by Potiphar's wife, it was unsuccessful at its 1914 Paris premiere.
