Penguins
(Lyle Lovett)
I don't go for fancy cars
For diamond rings
Or movie stars
I go for penguins
Oh Lord I go for penguins
Throw your money out the door
We'll just sit around
And watch it snow
I go for penguins
Oh Lord I go for penguins
Penguins are so sensitive
Penguins are so sensitive
Penguins are so sensitive
To my needs
Penguins are so sensitive
Penguins are so sensitive
Penguins are so sensitive
To my needs
To my needs
To my needs
To my needs
Penguins are so sensitive
Penguins are so sensitive
Penguins are so sensitive
To my needs

I've Been to Memphis
(Lyle Lovett)
The sun comes up
In a coffee cup
Waitress please I've had enough
Lord I can't believe what I see
How could you be alone
When you could sit right here beside me girl
And make yourself at home
I've been to Memphis
And Muscle Shoals
And I love a woman
What I don't know
When the sun goes down
In another town
Bartender please another round
Lord I can't believe what I see
How could you be alone
When you could sit right here beside me girl
And make yourself at home
I've been to Houston
And San Antonio
And I love a woman
What I don't know
Sherry she had big ones
Sally had some too
But Allison had little ones
What hate to go to school
And I make my bed
Where I lay my head
And I wish I heard what she just said
Lord I can't believe what I see
How could you be alone
When you could sit right here beside me girl
And make yourself at home
I've been to LA
And El Paso
And I love a woman
What I don't know
Sherry she had big ones
Sally had some too
But Allison had little ones
What hate to go to school
And I make my bed
Where I lay my head
And I wish I heard what she just said
Lord I can't believe what I see
How could you be alone
When you could sit right here beside me girl
And make yourself at home
I've been to...
And where I go
I love a woman
What I don't know
That's Right (You're Not From Texas)
(Lyle Lovett, Willis Alan Ramsey, and Alison Rogers)
You say you're not from Texas
Man as if I couldn't tell
You think you pull your boots on right
And wear your hat so well
So pardon me my laughter
'Cause I sure do understand
Even Moses got excited
When he saw the promised land
That's right you're not from Texas
That's right you're not from Texas
That's right you're not from Texas
But Texas wants you anyway
That's right you're not from Texas
That's right you're not from Texas
That's right you're not from Texas
But Texas wants you anyway
See I was born and raised in Texas
And it means so much to me
Though my girl comes from down in Georgia
We were up in Tennessee
And as we were driving down the highway
She asked me baby what's so great
How come you're always going on
About your Lone Star State
I said that's right you're not from Texas
That's right you're not from Texas
That's right you're not from Texas
But Texas wants you anyway
That's right you're not from Texas
That's right you're not from Texas
That's right you're not from Texas
But Texas wants you anyway
Oh the road it looked so lovely
As she stood there on the side
And she grew smaller in my mirror
As I watched her wave goodbye
Those boys from Carolina
They sure enough could sing
But when they came on down to Texas
We all showed them how to swing
Now David's on the radio
And old Champ's still on the guitar
And Uncle Walt he's home with Heidi
Hiding in her loving arms
That's right you're not from Texas
That's right you're not from Texas
That's right you're not from Texas
But Texas wants you anyway
That's right you're not from Texas
That's right you're not from Texas
That's right you're not from Texas
But Texas wants you anyway
They're OK in Oklahoma
Up in Arkansas they're fair
But those old folks in Missouri
They don't even know you're there
But at a dance hall down in Texas
That's the finest place to be
The women they all look beautiful
And their men will buy your beer for free
And they'll say that's right you're not from Texas
That's right you're not from Texas
That's right you're not from Texas
But Texas wants you anyway
That's right you're not from Texas
That's right you're not from Texas
That's right you're not from Texas
But Texas wants you anyway
So won't you let me help you Mister
Just pull your hat down the way I do
And buy your pants just a little longer
And next time somebody laughs at you
You just tell 'em you're not from Texas
That's right you're not from Texas
That's right you're not from Texas
But Texas wants you anyway
That's right you're not from Texas
That's right you're not from Texas
That's right you're not from Texas
But Texas wants you anyway
Nobody Knows Me
(Lyle Lovett)
And I like cream in my coffee
And I like to sleep late on Sunday
And nobody knows me like my baby
And I like eggs over easy
With flour tortillas
And nobody knows me like my baby
And nobody holds me
And nobody knows me
Nobody knows me like my baby
But it was a dream made to order
South of the border
And nobody knows me like my baby
And she cried man how could you do it
And I swore that there weren't nothing to it
But nobody knows me like my baby
And nobody holds me
And nobody knows me
Nobody knows me like my baby
And I like cream in my coffee
And I hate to be alone on Sunday
And nobody knows me like my baby
If I Had A Boat
(Lyle Lovett)
If I had a boat
I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
Me upon my pony on my boat
If I were Roy Rogers
I'd sure enough be single
I couldn't bring myself to marrying old Dale
It'd just be me and trigger
We'd go riding through them movies
Then we'd buy a boat and on the sea we'd sail
And if I had a boat
I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
Me upon my pony on my boat
The mystery masked man was smart
He got himself a Tonto
'Cause Tonto did the dirty work for free
But Tonto he was smarter
And one day said kemo sabe
Kiss my ass I bought a boat
I'm going out to sea
And if I had a boat
I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
Me upon my pony on my boat
And if I were like lightning
I wouldn't need no sneakers
I'd come and go wherever I would please
And I'd scare 'em by the shade tree
And I'd scare 'em by the light pole
But I would not scare my pony on my boat out on the sea
And if I had a boat
I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
Me upon my pony on my boat
North Dakota
(Lyle Lovett and Willis Alan Ramsey)
The boys from North Dakota
They drink whisky for their fun
And the cowboys down in Texas
They polish up their guns
And they look across the border
To learn the ways of love
If you love me, say I love you
If you love me, say I do
If you love me, say I love you
If you love me, say I do
And you can say I love you
And you can say I do
So I drank myself some whisky
And I dreamed I was a cowboy
And I rode across the border
If you love me, say I love you
If you love me, take my hand
If you love me, say I love you
If you love me, take my hand
And you can say I love you
And you can have my hand
I remember in the mornings
Waking up
With your arms around my head
You told me you can sleep forever
And I'll still hold you then
Now the weather's getting colder
It's even cold down here
And the words that you have told me
Hang frozen in the air
And sometimes I look right through them
As if they were not there
And the boys from North Dakota
They drink whisky for their fun
And the cowboys down in Texas
They polish up their guns
And they look across the border
To learn the ways of love
She's No Lady
(Lyle Lovett)
She hates my mama
She hates my daddy too
She loves to tell me
She hates the things I do
She loves to lie beside me
Almost every night
She's no lady she's my wife
The preacher asked her
And she said I do
The preacher asked me
And she said yes he does too
And the preacher said
I pronounce you 99 to life
Son she's no lady she's your wife
And I can't remember
How I met her
Seems like she's always just been hanging here off my right arm
And I can't remember
How I ever
Thought that I just couldn't live without a woman's charm
And even though
She loves the smell of French perfume
And even though
She walks around in high-heel shoes
All I know
Is I'm the one who pays her price
Man she's no lady she's my wife
And I can't remember
How I met her
Seems like she's always just been hanging here off my right arm
And I can't remember
How I ever
Thought that I just couldn't live without a woman's charm
Yea she hates my mama
She hates my daddy too
She loves to tell me
She hates the things I do
She loves to lie beside me
Almost every night
She's no lady she's my wife
Here I Am
(Lyle Lovett)
Hello
I'm the guy who sits next to you
And reads the newspaper over your shoulder
Wait
Don't turn the page
I'm not finished
Life is so uncertain
Here I am
Yes it's me
Take my hand
And you'll see
Here I am
Yes it's true
All I want
Girl is you
Given that true intellectual and emotional compatability
Are at the very least difficult
If not impossible to come by
We could always opt for the more temporal gratification
Of sheer physical attraction
That wouldn't make you a shallow person
Would it
Here I am
Yes it's me
Take my hand
And you'll see
Here I am
Yes it's true
All I want
Girl is you
If Ford is to Chevrolet
What Dodge is to Chrysler
What Corn Flakes are to Post Toasties
What the clear blue sky is to the deep blue sea
What Hank Williams is to Neil Armstrong
Can you doubt we were made for each other
Here I am
Yes it's me
Take my hand
And you'll see
Here I am
Yes it's true
All I want
Girl is you
Look
I understand too little too late
I realize there are things you say and do
You can never take back
But what would you be if you didn't even try
You have to try
So after a lot of thought
I'd like to reconsider
Please
If it's not too late
Make it a cheeseburger
Here I am
Yes it's me
Take my hand
And you'll see
Here I am
Yes it's true
All I want
Girl is you
Wild Women Don't Get The Blues
Well, you hear about all these women raising about their funky, funky, funky men
They've got some trifling husbands. Lord knows, they've got a lot of no good friends
All these fretting women sitting around the house all day long, and they are wondering when their loving papas are ever coming home
Wild women never worry. Wiiiiiiild women never never worry
I got a sweet disposition. Gonna wear my very own. I ain't never gonna spend one lonely night at home all alone
I can go out and drink all the courvoisier I can find.
Walk the streets and I can tell any man to go to hell if that man doesn't know how to act right
Wild women we don't every worry. Wiiiiiiild women never never get the blues.
Well, you fellas ain't ever gonna get nothing if you keep acting like an angel, child
Give it up tonight's a real real good night. Y'all gotta learn how to get to together well
Cuz I'll tell one more thing (Francine never tells a lie)
Wild women will be the first ones, Lord to learn how to fly
Wild women never worry. Wiiiiild women don't get the blues
M-O-N-E-Y
(Lyle Lovett)
If you want that girl
Listen son
Don't you sit around and cry
Because love
In this world
Ain't nothing you can't buy
She's got
Ruby lips
And emerald eyes
She's got diamonds on her mind
If you want that girl
What you need is
M-o-n-e-y
That's m-o-n-e-y baby
M-o-n-e-y
That's m-o-n-e-y baby
M-o-n-e-y
I was out last night
With my girlfriend
Things were going
Very fine
And I asked her
Would you like a kiss
She said thank you no but I'll have some
M-o-n-e-y
That's m-o-n-e-y baby
M-o-n-e-y
That's m-o-n-e-y baby
M-o-n-e-y
No finance
No romance
Was how she told me goodbye
First she took my love
And then she took all my
M-o-n-e-y
That's m-o-n-e-y baby
M-o-n-e-y
That's m-o-n-e-y baby
M-o-n-e-y
'Cause she's got
Ruby lips
And emerald eyes
She's got diamonds on her mind
And if you want that girl
What you need is
M-o-n-e-y
And that's m-o-n-e-y baby
M-o-n-e-y
That's m-o-n-e-y baby
M-o-n-e-y
You Can't Resist It
(Lyle Lovett)
She was old enough
To know better
And she was strong enough
To be true
And she was hard enough
To know whether
He was smart enough
To know what to do
And you can't resist it
When it happens to you
No you can't resist it
When it happens to you
And you can tell your story
And you can swear it's true
But you can save your lying
For some other fool
And you can't resist it
When it happens to you
No you can't resist it
When it happens to you
She was old enough
To know better
And she was strong enough
To be true
And she was hard enough
To know whether
He was smart enough
To know what to do
And you can't resist it
When it happens to you
No you can't resist it
When it happens to you
And you can't resist it
When it happens to you
No you can't resist it
When it happens to you
Church
(Lyle Lovett)
I went to church last Sunday
So I could sing and pray
But something quite unusual
Happened on that day
Now church it started right on time
Just like it does without a doubt
And everything was all just fine
Except when it came time to let us out
You know the preacher he kept preaching
He told us I have one more thing to say
Children before you think of leaving
You better think about the Judgment Day
Now everyone got nervous
Because everyone was hungry too
And everyone was wondering
What was the next thing he would do
And the preacher he kept preaching
He said now I'll remind you if I may
You all better pay attention
Or I might decide to preach all day
And now everyone was getting so hungry
That the old ones started feeling ill
And the weak ones started passing out
And the young ones they could not sit still
And the preacher's voice rose higher
So I snuck up on the balcony
And I crept into the choir
And I begged them brothers, sisters, help me please
I said when I give you a signal
I said when I raise up my hand
Won't you please join with me together
And praise the Lord I have a plan
And the preacher he kept preaching
Long is the struggle, hard the fight
And I prayed, Father please forgive me
And then I stood up and with all my might
I sang
To the Lord let praises be
It's time for dinner now let's go eat
We've got some beans and some good cornbread
And I listened to what the preacher said
Now it's to the Lord let praised be
It's time for dinner now let's go eat
Yes and I did give a signal
Yes and I raised up my hands
And then joined with me the choir
Yes every woman, child, and man
They sang
To the Lord let praised be
It's time for dinner now let's go eat
We've got some beans and some good cornbread
And I've listened to what the preacher said
Now it's to the Lord let praised be
It's time for dinner now let's go eat
And the preacher he stopped preaching
And a hush the church did fill
And then a great white dove from up above
Landed on the window sill
And the dove flew down beside him
And a fork appeared right in his hand
And with everybody watching
The preacher ate that bird right there and then
And now everyone got really nervous
And the preacher he did start to glow
And as we watched in disbelief
These were the words he spoke
He said now Mama's in the kitchen
And she's been there all day
And I know she's cooking something good
So let's bow our heads and pray
And he sang
To the Lord let praises be
It's time for dinner now let's go eat
We've got some beans and some good cornbread
Now listen to what the preacher said
He said to the Lord let praised be
It's time for dinner now let's go eat
And the moral of this story
Children it is plain but true
God knows if a preacher preaches long enough
Even he'll get hungry too
And he'll sing
To the Lord let praises be
It's time for dinner now let's go eat
We've got some beans and some good cornbread
Now listen to what the preacher said
He said to the Lord let praised be
It's time for dinner now let's go eat
Closing Time
(Lyle Lovett)
The night she is a true companion
They shuffle in
They hear the sound
But by night's end
It's night's abandon
You look across the floor
Ain't anyone around
Closing time
Unplug them people
And send them home
It's closing time
Now Kenny he's been mixing sound all evening
Sometimes I think that boy
He ain't got no ears
And Kathy's laughing
Kathy's always laughing
Well keep on laughing Kathy
Just make it out of here
Closing time
Unplug them people
And send them home
It's closing time
So stack those chairs upon those tables
And stack those empties upon that bar
And count your money
And count my money
And hear those bottles ringing
You know where you are
Closing time
Unplug them people
And send them home
It's closing time
The night's all that's left behind
You take your part and I'll take mine
And go on home
It's closing time
